The Israeli navy announced on Sunday that it had intercepted a ship off the Gaza Strip on Sunday (July 29, 2018) carrying activists who wanted to reach the Gaza Strip, denouncing the land and sea blockade imposed on Palestinians in the area for more than a decade.
The Israeli army said in a statement that the ship had been sent from Europe "to breach the legal blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip," adding that it was transferred to Ashdod port in southern Israel.

Israel has waged three wars in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip since 2008 and says the blockade is necessary to prevent Palestinian militants from acquiring weapons or equipment that can be used for military purposes.

According to activists, the Norwegian-flagged "return" ship, which left 22 people, left Palermo on July 21, 2018.

Another ship called Freedom is expected to fly the flag of Sweden by Tuesday off the coast of Gaza, according to the Freedom Flotilla, which organized the operation.

Four Scandinavian ships left in mid-May 2018 and stopped at 28 ports, but two of them arrived in Palermo, the last stop.

"Our ship was seized by Israeli forces," the operation's officials wrote on Twitter.

Before the ship was intercepted, the organizers issued a statement confirming that the Israeli navy had issued an ultimatum to its crew.

"The Israeli navy confirmed that our ship violated international law and threatened to resort to all necessary measures to stop us," they said.

"The only action that is really necessary is to end the siege and allow freedom of movement again for the Palestinians," they said.

About 40 activists from 15 countries, including two French nationals, are participating in the process, said one of the organizers, Pierre Stamboul, who co-chairs the Jewish Federation for Peace.

Israel has imposed a siege on the Gaza Strip for more than a decade. Residents often suffer from power outages due to inadequate delivery of fuel.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) says 80 percent of Gaza's 2 million people need help.

Israel has reopened the Kerem Shalom crossing, which has been closed for two weeks in response to the firing of kites and Molotov cocktails at Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip.

At least 157 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli gunfire since protests against the blockade on the Gaza Strip began on March 30.

The United Nations has called on Israel to lift restrictions on Gaza hospitals and water distribution networks.

In 2010, the Israeli navy killed 10 Turks in an attack on a flotilla of pro-Palestinian militants.

Ankara has cut diplomatic ties with Israel by 2016.

Other attempts have been made to break the siege on Gaza, especially in 2016, when the Israeli navy intercepted 13 women, among them Irish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire, 30 kilometers from the Gaza coast before being deported.
