(Reuters) - A representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry in the province of Khuzestan, Wahid Haji, threatened Monday to sue the Iraqi government if it is proven to have caused a fire in Hor al-Azim, in Maysan province bordering Iran.
"If the fires in Hor al-Azim were deliberate by Baghdad, and we got documents, the Iranian Foreign Ministry could sue Iraq and demand financial compensation," Haji was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.
"The burning of Hor al-Azim in Iraq today for the second time has caused environmental problems for Iranian areas bordering the border," Haji said at a crisis management meeting in Khuzestan.
The Iranian official said that he "demanded from the Iraqi ambassador in Tehran, Rajih al-Moussawi, to send a letter of protest to the officials in Baghdad," pointing out that "Iran is considering the issue of renewed fires in Hor al-Azim."
A spokesman for the Iranian Air Force Rida Jafar Zad, reported that "two Iranian helicopters participated in extinguishing the Great Hur Fire in Missan," but the Iraqi government did not comment on the subject.
