Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that Moscow is ready to discuss simplifying the visa regime for certain categories of Turkish citizens on the principle of reciprocity.
Lavrov said in a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Mouloud Gawishoglu at the end of their talks in the Russian capital that Moscow and Ankara agreed to set up a mechanism to simplify the visa system for Turkish citizens.
Since early 2016, Russia has suspended an agreement signed in 2010 that allowed Turkish citizens to enter Russia without a visa for up to 30 days. The move came after the Turkish air force shot down a Russian fighter in Syria.
For its part, since April 15, 2016, the Russians have been obliged to obtain a visa, while regular passport holders have been excluded from the procedure, fearing that the visa would affect the flow of tourists from Russia to Turkey.
