The United States of America announced on Saturday its position on events in the Iraqi city of Basra.
"According to the Iraqi constitution, the right to peaceful protest and the duty to protect public and private property go hand in hand," said a statement by US State Department official Heather Neuert on the violence in Basra.
"The United States condemns violence against diplomats, including what happened today in Basra, and calls on all parties, including the security forces and demonstrators, to support the right to peaceful protest and the protection of diplomats and their installations," the statement said.
Dozens of people demonstrated on Friday afternoon outside the Iranian consulate in the southernmost province of Basra, demanding Tehran stop interfering in Iraq.
The protesters also called on Iran to withdraw the parties loyal to the province, which accused them of managing financial and administrative corruption in the state institutions and services.
Iraqi security sources said the protesters stormed the consulate building in the Abe al-Khasib area and set fire to it, chanting slogans against Iran.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry earlier expressed regret that the Iranian Consulate General in Basra was attacked by protesters and set fire to them.
Meanwhile, the Basra Operations Command imposed a blanket ban on roaming and further notice after recent developments.
In light of the rapid events, a young man was killed and other protesters were wounded during a shooting from the headquarters of the Popular People's Assembly in Basra after being besieged and tried to storm him by the demonstrators.
"Unidentified assailants claim to be demonstrators who destroyed the Jafar al-Tayyar center for the treatment of wounded and disabled members of the popular crowd in Basra province and assaulted the wounded who were being treated, while burning the office of the popular crowd of the prime minister," the media said in a statement.
"Unknown groups, some wearing masks and claiming to be protestors, have this evening destroyed the Jafar al-Tayyar center of the popular crowd clinic, which is treating the wounded and the disabled of the entire crowd," the media said. "These groups attacked the wounded who are being treated."
The statement added that "these groups also burned the office of the popular crowd of the prime minister in the province of Basra."
The provinces of Basra are witnessing continuous demonstrations since the beginning of last July to protest the deterioration of the reality of the service, has escalated recently after the contamination of drinking water, and high salinity, causing thousands of intestinal diseases, and severe severe.
Hundreds of angry protesters set on fire on Thursday evening at government offices and offices of parties and Shiite factions close to Iran, led by Badr Organization led by Hadi al-Amiri and Asaib Ahl al-Haq led by Qais al-Khazali.
This was the latest escalation in the violence associated with the ongoing popular protests in the central and southern provinces since July, which calls for improving public services and providing jobs and fighting corruption.
Security authorities imposed a curfew in Basra to contain the violence.
Since the start of protests in Basra, on July 9, the total number of dead has reached 26 demonstrators, according to figures of the High Commission for Human Rights.
