Pompeo Arrives In Tokyo For Talks Before His Visit To North Korea

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Tokyo on Saturday for talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other officials ahead of his fourth visit to North Korea for talks on nuclear disarmament with leader Kim Jong-un.
Despite Kim's pledge to free the Korean Peninsula from nuclear weapons, Japan, Washington's main ally in Asia, still regards North Korea as a "serious threat" and moves ahead with plans to boost its ballistic missile defenses with Aegis Ashur batteries that can target warheads in space.
Speaking to a group of reporters on his way to Tokyo, Pompeo said the aim of his talks in Pyongyang at the weekend was to "make sure we understand what each party is really trying to achieve." The last visit by Pompeo to North Korea did not produce good results. Pompeo left Pyongyang in July praising progress, but North Korea has condemned it for "guerrilla-style demands." Pompeo has angered North Korea recently by insisting that international sanctions should continue until it renounces its nuclear weapons. He said on Wednesday there was unanimous support for this during the UN General Assembly meeting in the past few days, even though Russia and China "have some ideas on how we might start thinking about when it would be appropriate to reduce" the sanctions.
