The Chinese special envoy arrived Saturday in North Korea. "
North Korean official news agency reported that the envoy Sung Tao met with Choi Ryong Hai, a senior official of the North Korean regime and a close aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
According to the agency, Song Tao told his interlocutors that China is willing to "develop traditional friendship between the two parties and the two countries" without giving any details on the content of the talks.
Song's visit comes north after the conclusion of the Communist Party of China (CPC) conference recently, and officials in Seoul said Beijing has traditionally sent a senior official to its communist ally to explain the results of the party's congress. Song is currently head of the International Relations Department of the CPC Central Committee.
However, Song's visit also comes after President Hu Jintao's bilateral summit with US President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday. During his 12-day visit to Asia, which included visits to Japan and South Korea, the US president called on China to do more to rein in North Korea's advanced nuclear and missile programs.
Details of Seoul's North Korean agenda were not disclosed, but diplomatic sources said the visit would take four days and could meet with North Korean leader Kim.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said earlier that the two sides will exchange views on issues of common interest at party and country level and Song will report on the outcome of the CPC conference.
