"The disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi al-Saud in a closed meeting to resolve the crisis," the French newspaper Le Figaro reported on Wednesday evening.

"In the light of mounting pressure after the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the sages of the ruling family in Saudi Arabia have begun to look and take the highest interest in the case of Saudi Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz," the French daily said, quoting a diplomatic source in Paris.

The information was confirmed by a Saudi who contacted him in the capital, Riyadh, and Le Figaro did not reveal his identity.

The meeting was attended by at least seven representatives of the royal family to discuss the crisis resulting from the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul more than two weeks ago.

At a time of increasing international pressure, the royal family is looking into the dubious case of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the paper said.

US Secretary of State Donald Trump said King Salman and his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, "do not know" Khashoggi's fate after phone calls between the two sides. They promised US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to conduct a "thorough and speedy investigation".

The exclusive report published by the French newspaper days after the US State Department announced on October 11 that the Saudi ambassador to the United States Prince Khalid bin Salman had gone to Riyadh, adding that Washington is waiting on his return information on the case of disappearance of Khashoggi.

Khashoggi's disappearance after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on February 2 has resonated widely in the world, with Saudi officials saying the US-based freelance journalist left the consulate shortly after entering.

For its part, The Washington Post reported that some Turkish officials told their American counterparts that they have audio and video recordings proving the assassination of the journalist inside the consulate building, which was categorically denied by the Saudi authorities.

The Turkish and Saudi sides are cooperating in the investigation, as Turkish investigators searched the Consulate building and residence of the Saudi consul in Istanbul.
