(Reuters) - US Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump, hours after the mid-term elections in which Republicans won a majority in the Senate in return for their loss to the House of Representatives for Democrats.
Trump said in a press statement that Justice Department Chief of Staff Matt Whitaker would take over Sessions' duties until a new minister was appointed later.
Sessions said in a letter of resignation that his decision came at the request of President Donald Trump.
In the first reaction, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the new justice minister should not interfere with the investigation by special investigator Robert Mueller in the case of Russia's intervention in the presidential election.[/size]
