The US Senate has warned Ankara of a final ultimatum, according to which Turkey must choose between Russia and the West.
"It is time for Ankara to decide and act in accordance with its status as a member of NATO," James Enhoff, chairman of the Armed Services Committee of the Senate, told the Bloomberg website.
"Turkey has to choose between Russia and the West - if it wants to stay on the F-35 program, it has to refuse to buy the S-400," he said.
He stressed that Turkey was "waiting for the consequences" if it continued to buy the S-400, but did not specify what action it would take.
According to Bloomberg, the United States fears that, after the delivery of the S-400 system, Russian military experts will arrive in Turkey and discover the secrets of "anti-radar" in US F-35 fighter bombers.
"There are concerns that the Turks will allow Russian specialists to test S-400 radars against Turkish F- 35s , in order to neutralize the anti-radar properties of the US fighter," said military expert Steven Zaloghe .
A contract for the supply of Russian S-400 air defense systems was signed in 2017. According to the document, Turkey should obtain four S-400 battalions of $ 2.5 billion.
