Saad Al-Muttalibi, a member of the security committee in the Baghdad Provincial Council, said on Tuesday that the US Embassy in the Iraqi capital issued a warning to its citizens to travel to Iraq linked to the partial opening of the Green Zone in Baghdad.
"The US warning is a diplomatic message because of the opening of the fortified Green Zone in the center of the capital Baghdad," he said, noting that "the US embassy in Baghdad says that green opening is a new headache."
He pointed out that "after the opening of the Green Zone will be targeting the US embassy easier by terrorist groups or some armed factions, it will be close to the range of fire," and expected that "the American side may be pressing not to open the embassy in the Green Zone."

The Green Zone is the common name of Baghdad's international neighborhood, established by the US-led coalition forces after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
The region is one of the most militarized sites in Iraq, including government and military headquarters, the US Embassy, Governmental and foreign countries.
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has announced on several occasions his intention to open the Green Zone, in reference to the improvement of the security situation.
The partial conquest of the Green Zone coincides with the celebration of the defeat of the Dahesh organization, which controlled more than a third of the country's territory in 2014, and made the city of Mosul akin to its capital, before Iraqi forces could defeat it on December 10, 2017.
