The US Senate has backed a bill imposing the first sanctions on Saudi Arabia.
The council supported a bill to end US military support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, Reuters reported.
The bill was passed by 56 senators, against the opposition of 41 others, to the resolution criticizing Saudi Arabia for the first time.
This is the first time that Congress has supported a move to withdraw US troops from foreign military participation under the War Powers Act.
The War Powers Act limits the ability of the US president to commit US forces to potential hostilities without congressional approval.
The law, enacted during the Vietnam War, tightened the president's ability to keep US troops in front of possible hostilities without congressional approval.
