The Jordanian parliament responded Thursday to the remarks of an Iraqi deputy who objected to holding festivals in the kingdom to glorify Saddam Hussein.
The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives Nidal al-Ta'ani said in remarks to the site "The News", "The Iraqi statements, including what was issued by MP Alia Nassif to stop glorifying Saddam Hussein in Jordan will never affect relations between the two countries."
He added that "the MP is trying through these statements courting their electoral base and can not affect the strong relations between the two countries," noting that "any observations on bilateral relations are dealt with through diplomatic channels and through the embassies of Iraq and Jordan."
For his part, said MP Khalid Ramadan, that "the right of all Jordanian institutions to establish events within the principle of freedom guaranteed by the Jordanian Constitution."
He explained that "no parliament has the right to impose on Jordan what is contrary to its internal charters guaranteed by the constitution, especially freedom of expression."
Before the end of last year, Jordan witnessed several events to commemorate Saddam Hussein's anniversary of his execution, the latest of which was the event held at the professional syndicate complex in the northern city of Irbid.
The MP asked for a coalition of state law high Nassif in the statement Jordan to respect the will of the Iraqis and not provoked by the establishment of gatherings glorifying the regime of Saddam and embrace conferences hostile to Iraq.
Nassif said in a statement that "if the Jordanian government justified these behaviors as individual actions, this justification is not acceptable. Jordanian security can prevent such gatherings offensive to the Iraqi people and hold accountable those who participate in them, calling on the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pressure Jordan in this regard."
