public mass of Pope Francis, to be held on February 5 in Abu Dhabi, can be witnessed directly by about 120,000 people , the National newspaper reported on Wednesday .

The head of the Apostolic Office for the South of the Arabian Peninsula, Bishop Paul Hinder, said that the distribution of invitation cards to attend the mass will take place across churches in the Arabian Peninsula. At the same time, he added, the number of those wishing to attend may exceed the capacity of the stadium.

Most of the invitations are expected to be distributed among Catholic churches in the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Yemen, with a small portion devoted to churches in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

The public mass of Pope Francis will take place at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The press office of the Vatican announced earlier that the first visit of the Pope to the history of the Catholic Church to the UAE will take place between 3 and 5 February. In addition, this will be the first visit of the Pope to the Arabian Peninsula. Before that, Francis visited several Islamic countries, including Turkey, Azerbaijan and Egypt.

Diplomatic relations between the UAE and the Vatican were established in 2007. Last June, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan handed over the Pope an official invitation to visit the United Arab Emirates .
