    The United States sent two warships through the Taiwan Straits on Thursday, the first such operation this year, as Washington stepped up the pace of the strategic waterway amid tension with China, the Taiwan government said.
    "The two ships headed north and their flight conformed to the rules," the defense ministry said in a statement late on Thursday. 
    "Taiwan has closely watched the process" to ensure the security of the sea and regional stability, "the

    In return, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen responded by pledging to defend the democracy of the island.
