    US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday for a surprise visit, a day after a similar visit to Kabul, capital of Afghanistan. 
    During the visit, which was not announced in advance for security reasons, the US secretary of state will hold talks with Iraqi officials apparently to discuss his country's military presence in Iraq. 
    The 5,500-strong US presence has been rejected by Shiite political currents close to Iran.

    The US State Department said US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan's visit was aimed at emphasizing the importance of Iraq's sovereignty and discussing the future of US troops there. 
    The visit came as a surprise after US President Donald Trump said this month that the US presence was needed to monitor Iran. 
    On his first visit to Iraq, Chanahan planned to discuss the withdrawal of US troops from Syria with US commanders and meet with Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi. According to Reuters.

    BAGHDAD / US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday for a visit he said was an invitation from the Iraqi government.

    BAGHDAD - 
    The US State Department revealed on Tuesday the reason for the surprise visit of US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan to Iraq. 
    "The visit of Patrick Shanahan, Acting US Secretary of Defense aims to emphasize the importance of the sovereignty of Iraq, and discuss the future of US forces there." 
    Shanahan is expected to meet with Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to discuss ways to combat terrorism and share intelligence on the elimination of the Daash organization. 
    The visit comes days after US President Donald Trump announced that he planned to keep his troops in Iraq to "monitor Iran."

    US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan revealed his expected talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi.
    "We are in Iraq at the invitation of the government and it is in America's interest to build Iraqi security capabilities," Shanhan told Reuters in Baghdad.
    "I want to hear directly from him about the concerns and the political dynamics they are facing, and therefore we will make that clear in our planning for our presence in Iraq," he said, referring to what he would discuss with Abdul Mahdi.
    Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday on an undeclared visit, during which he said he would stress the importance of Iraqi sovereignty and address the future of US forces there.
    In the same context, US President Donald Trump said this month that the US presence was required to monitor Iran, which would go beyond the US-led coalition's mission in Iraq and Syria to a daunting defeat.
    Shanahan is scheduled to meet with leaders including Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and discuss withdrawing US troops from Syria with US leaders.
