(AFP) - US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was pleased with the increase in NATO spending on defense, praising the surge in spending since taking office.

"There has been tremendous progress, and NATO is stronger," Trump told reporters during a meeting in Washington with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg before the 70th anniversary of the alliance.
He described the increase in spending as "rocket. People are paying and I am very happy. " Trump has long expressed doubts about the alliance, accusing Western allies that their military spending is far too low.
Trump's management is particularly distasteful for Germany, Europe's biggest economy, which does not seem to be committed to meeting the 2014 pledge by its members to spend 2 percent of GDP on defense.
Former Norwegian Prime Minister Stoltenberg supported Trump's spending positions and defended the president's approach by urging members to agree.
Stoltenberg said earlier this year that between 2016 and the end of next year, the 28 members of NATO except the United States will have increased military spending by 100 billion dollars.
Trump said he was seeking a better relationship with Russia - which, like 70 years ago, is now seen as the main threat to the Western alliance.
"I hope we have a good relationship with Russia," Trump said, believing he would be.
The comments came about a week after the conclusion of the investigation of special prosecutor Robert Mueller, who concluded that no criminal collusion between the Trump presidential campaign of 2016 and Russia, according to a summary published by the Ministry of Justice.
