The US president has imposed a 5 percent tariff on goods coming from Mexico as of June 10 as long as illegal immigrants continue to flow across the border.
US President Donald Trump said in a tweet that customs duties would increase gradually if Mexico did not "largely stop the influx of illegal aliens across its territory."
According to a statement issued by the White House, customs duties on Mexican goods may rise gradually to reach the level of 25% in October, and added that Washington reserves the right to cancel these fees "at its discretion."
"It is catastrophic," he said. "If this threat is carried out, it will be extremely dangerous. If that happens, we must respond strongly."
While Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called on his US counterpart to the dialogue, declaring at the same time that a Mexican delegation will travel Friday to Washington.
On trade exchanges between the United States and Mexico, data from ITC Trade last year show that the balance of trade between the two countries is in the interest of Mexico, where exports to the United States amounted to 349.6 billion dollars, compared with imports of 265 billion dollars.
