WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump said asylum seekers would stay in Mexico as their applications are evaluated in the United States, in what appeared to be a confirmation of a report in the Washington Post earlier.
"Migrants on the southern border will not be allowed [to enter] the United States, pending their applications being individually approved by the judiciary," Trump wrote on Twitter.
The deal comes as Trump's anger mounted as thousands of Central American immigrants arrived in convoys on the Mexican side of the border in the hope of entering the United States in search of a better life.
"At the moment, we have agreed on a policy that [the refugees] stay in Mexico," the Post quoted Interior Minister Olga Sanchez Cordero as saying.
Sanchez Cordero, a member of the administration of Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who will take office on December 1, said it would be a "short-term solution."
US officers will begin implementing the new measures in the coming days or weeks, according to Homeland Security officials.
US officials will be able to address at least twice the number of asylum applications under the new system because they will not be restricted to places of detention in US ports of entry, the report said.
Under the new rules, the rejected applicant will not be allowed to use Mexico, but will remain in US custody until he is immediately deported to his home country.
The agreement was signed last week in Houston during a meeting between Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Iberard and US officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kersten Nielsen and Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo.

[rtl]The deal comes as Trump grew increasingly angry after thousands of Central American migrants arrived in convoys on the Mexican side of the border, hoping to enter the United States in search of a better life.
"At the moment, we have agreed on a policy of staying in Mexico," said Olga Sanchez Cordero, Mexico's future interior minister.
Sanchez Cordero, a member of the new administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who will take office on December 1, said it would be a "short-term solution."
"The solution in the medium and long term is not to emigrate," she said.
The newspaper said no formal agreement had been signed, but US officials viewed the deal as a potential breakthrough to deter immigration.
US officers involved in implementing the new measures will begin in the coming days or weeks, according to Homeland Security officials.
Refugee cases will initially be examined to determine whether they are in imminent danger of survival in Mexico, where violence is rampant.
US officials will be able to address at least twice the number of asylum applications under the new system because they will not be confined to places of detention in US ports of entry, the report said.
