The European Union provides 15 million euros to vulnerable farmers in northern Iraq

(Reuters) - Agricultural families in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh will benefit from an EU contribution of 15 million euros to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to restore agricultural livelihoods. The area, which includes the city of Mosul, was known as the "bread basket" in the country before the conflict caused extensive damage and marriage.
The project is expected to directly benefit some 10,000 poor farming households (about 60,000 people), as well as benefits from local service providers and workers.
"As part of the EU's commitment to Iraq as a whole, it is a high priority to support the areas devastated by the recent war," said Ramon Blakeau, EU Ambassador to Iraq. This new project communities and returnees in rural areas increase their income and employment opportunities available to them.
"We are grateful to the European Union for this generous contribution that will help us in rehabilitating major agricultural facilities and equipment," said Mustafa Sinasar, FAO Representative in Iraq.
"The creation of jobs in this region, which is the heart of agriculture and depends a lot of jobs on the rich soil in the province of Nineveh, is vital to achieve stability in society."
The impact of the conflict on the agricultural sector has been devastating, damaging water systems, irrigation facilities and other agricultural infrastructure, disrupting value chains, causing loss of personal property, crop and livestock production and food supplies.
Since the Iraqi government announced a year ago the defeat of the so-called Islamic State Organization, also known as Dahesh, many people have returned to that region, encouraged by efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment. However, some areas still lack basic services and employment opportunities for both returnees and those who have remained.
FAO and the European Union work together for agricultural households
The EU-funded project supports smallholder farming households to diversify incomes, increase resilience and provide nutritious and healthy food systems.
The project will support vulnerable small farmers to resume vegetable production, efficiently use and manage irrigation water, promote agro-food processing, improve milk processing and small-scale marketing, and increase and maintain animal feed production.
Women will be supported, in particular, to participate in the production and processing of vegetables and dairy products. Young unemployed agricultural graduates will be encouraged to take advantage of training to acquire employment as agro-food processors, facilitators of global farmer field schools, animal health workers in the community, market information system operators, and food security and nutrition data collectors and analysts.
These activities will respond together to the urgent needs of families of basic food and non-food items, as well as the recovery of agricultural livelihoods that generate income and long-term employment.
At the same time, the project aims to restore government infrastructure and vital support services to the agriculture sector that has been destroyed, destroyed or looted.
The project is a contribution from the European Union to the United Nations Program for Recovery and Response to Iraq (RRP). It is part of a larger package of support (184.4 million euros) contributed by the European Union to support the stability and humanitarian efforts of the United Nations to support the Government of Iraq since 2016.
