LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Ministry of Defense said on Saturday it had sent a new warship, the HMS Defender, to Gulf waters in the Strait of Hormuz to protect merchant ships, where tensions are high with Iran.
The ministry said in a statement that the ship "will participate in the efforts of the Royal Navy to ensure sailing ships in the Middle East safely."
"Britain is prepared to protect freedom of navigation every time it is threatened," Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said.
The ship left the port of Portsmouth on the 12th of this month along with the ship "HMS Kent".
The ships will now “work alongside international partners as part of the new international mission to ensure maritime security,” which Britain announced earlier this month along with the United States.
The ministry said the HMS Montrose remained in the area and had so far crossed more than 30 times in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions in this strategic region have escalated since the U.S. pulled out of the Iranian nuclear deal in May 2018 and was followed by harsh US sanctions on Tehran.
This summer has intensified with attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf attributed to Washington, which denies involvement.
On July 19, Iran seized the Swedish-flagged tanker Stina Ambro in the Strait of Hormuz, 15 days after British authorities seized the Iranian tanker Grace 1 off the coast of Gibraltar.
