US President Donald Trump has canceled peace talks with the Afghan Taliban in response to an attack in Kabul that killed 12 people, including a US soldier.
Trump revealed in a series of tweets that he had agreed to hold a secret meeting with Taliban leaders at Camp David, Maryland on Sunday, but was canceled after the group admitted responsibility for the attack.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was supposed to participate in the meeting, according to Trump.
On Monday, Trump's special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad announced a "principled" peace deal with the Taliban.
This came after several rounds of talks between the United States and representatives of the movement held in the Qatari capital Doha.
Trump accused the movement of seeking to use violence to secure more influence.
He said: "Unfortunately in order to obtain false influence, the Taliban acknowledged an attack in Kabul in which one of our valiant soldiers was killed."
He added: "I decided immediately to cancel the meeting and stop the peace negotiations."
The United States currently has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan.
It was supposed to withdraw 5,400 troops within 20 weeks under the proposed peace deal
