Iraq continues its movement to recover its looted and smuggled antiquities during the years after the US occupation in 2003, resulting in the absence of large numbers of important artifacts from ancient Iraqi history.
According to government sources from Iraq, the file of the recovery of Iraqi antiquities, is one of the most prominent files worked by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Iraq was able to retrieve 15 artefacts from the United States, followed by the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Turkish government to recover 80 artefacts that had been illegally removed from the country and found by the Turkish authorities in 2008.
"The ministry plans to conduct a series of visits to Arab and European countries to confirm Iraq's agreement with the world to recover the looted antiquities, whether before 2003, through smuggling or stolen items after the invasion of Iraq," the official said. He pointed out that some countries, such as Turkey and Jordan, deal with Iraq in a sporting spirit, in the file to recover the effects of the country. But there are some European countries that disavow international agreements related to the restoration of antiquities to the mother country, under the pretext of fears of theft or lack of care.
He pointed out that "Iraq during the past five months managed to retrieve more than 190 artifacts, most of which date back to the Babylonian era, and more than half arrived in Arab countries through the smuggling and illegal sale of Arab traders, including Iraqis," pointing out that "Iraq is moving It is currently approaching the UAE officially to retrieve many of the artifacts that were illegally purchased by UAE nationals, who keep them as decoration in their homes. The UAE government does not prevent it, nor does it confiscate it, a country with which Iraq has a good relationship, and we hope to reach an agreement with other Gulf countries. ”
