    BAGHDAD -
The President of the Republic, Barham Saleh, agreed with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to face the Turkish intervention in Syria.
"President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his Iraqi counterpart Barham Saleh discussed the situation in Syria after the Turkish attack on Wednesday," state television said.
"The two leaders agreed to continue joint work and consultations to face Turkish intervention in Syria and to preserve the integrity and unity of Syria," the television said.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced the start of a ground operation in northern Syria east of the Euphrates, and Turkish forces began bombing and invading areas adjacent to the border controlled by the armed forces of the "Syrian Democratic Forces.
" Twitter On Wednesday evening, the Turkish army has bombed 181 targets of Kurdish militants since the start of the operation in Syria.
The Turkish president announced on Wednesday that his country launched a military operation called "spring of peace" northeast of Syria "to clear these lands of terrorists," referring to the Kurdish "People's Protection Units", which Ankara considers an arm of the "PKK" and active within " Syrian Democratic Forces "supported by the United States as part of the campaign against" ISIS ".
The operation, the third for Turkey in Syria, was launched after months of unsuccessful negotiations between Turkey and the United States on the establishment of a "safe area" in northeast Syria to resolve the tension between the Turkish side and the Kurds peacefully, but these efforts did not result in achieving this goal due to differences Between the parties on the operation of this mechanism.
Turkey began its new operation after the United States announced on Monday the withdrawal of its troops from northeastern Syria by a decision by US President Donald Trump, a move strongly criticized by the Kurds despite his promise to destroy Turkey's economy if it "crossed the border."
