Researcher and political writer in the "Washington Examiner" magazine, Michael Rubin, showed his observations of the shock that the Iraqi city of Sununi, which is a few kilometers from the border with Syria, is still facing, after defeating ISIS.
Turkey does not discriminate
Robin adds that trauma is still present in various forms. The villagers surrounding Senuni must face Turkish air strikes around and in their villages and farms. Traveling at night near the Syrian border can be an invitation to death as Turkish drones may target cars and convoys. The Turks say they are fighting "Kurdish terrorists", but in practice they do not distinguish between farmers and PKK fighters, and displacement and sexual violence compound the effects of the shock.
Even more tragic is that many of the three thousand Yazidis kidnapped are still kidnapped. While American diplomats in Baghdad and Erbil consider these people to have died, their relatives not only believe that they are alive, but in many cases, the smugglers have provided recent photos and even audio messages willing to start negotiating with them to return them. The requests range from a few thousand to more than 70 thousand dollars.
Its agents impose an ISIS regime
Rubin notes that the problem is that the kidnapped and sexually enslaved Yezidis currently reside in Turkey-controlled lands inside Syria, and some of them are present in Turkey itself, according to some reports. In January 2018, Turkey invaded Afrin province, began ethnic cleansing, exhumed graves and forced Kurdish residents to leave their homes and farms. Its Syrian agents, some of whom had previously worked for al-Qaeda and ISIS, imposed a social order not much different from that imposed by ISIS. The same pattern is repeated in the towns and cities in northeastern Syria, which were subjected to the Turkish invasion.
Malignant Turkish influence
That Turkey, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has turned into an Islamic state, as this is a fait accompli. As Turkey seeks to increase international aid to deal with Syrian refugees living inside Turkey, Erdogan has systematically refused to distribute aid to Yazidis. Today, Rubin continued, Turkish influence appears to be more pernicious as its proxies continue to enslave Yezidi girls while both sides perpetuate ISIS practices and the trauma suffered by Yezidi victims.
A simple call to Erdogan
It is time for Turkey's supporters and pressure groups working for it in Washington or throughout the international community to stop talking about Turkey as a historical ally or as a member of NATO. Rubin called on them to make a simple call to Erdogan and his forces that all Yezidi girls and women who remain in slavery or forced marriages of children in Turkey or in the territories controlled by Turkey should be released.
To take them back from Turkish slavery
If the White House is serious about religious freedom, then the return of 3,000 Yezidi women and girls from Turkish de facto slavery should be a priority. Robin called on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to direct his instructions to the US embassy in Baghdad and the US Consulate General in Erbil in order to investigate the Yazidis' survival rather than highlighting indifference. The intelligence committees of the House and Senate can put pressure on the CIA about its knowledge of continued sexual and human trafficking in the post-ISIS era. And Robin said that this is certainly an issue that can be agreed upon by Democrats and Republicans even in the face of the trial and the sharp party in Washington.
