Baghdad - Mawazine News
Wide social groups of Iraqis have been living in difficult conditions for years, as a result of unemployment and lack of job opportunities, factors that have led many of those groups to engage strongly in most of the protest demonstrations that have taken place in the country, especially the last of them that started early last October and were suspended a few years ago. Days due to fears of corona virus outbreak.
After years of suffering and scarcity of living, the Corona crisis and the ensuing curfew came to cast more troubles and hardships on the population of an estimated population of 7 million citizens, according to the statistics of the Iraqi Ministry of Planning.
Despite the potential health risks and the curfew decision taken by the Iraqi authorities to confront the risks of the spread of the Corona virus, most of the popular markets, especially in the poor neighborhoods of Baghdad and the rest of the provinces, are witnessing a near-normal sale and purchase movement.
Most vendors and outlets ignore medical guidelines to avoid the risk of the deadly virus. A number of witnesses confirm to Asharq Al-Awsat that most of the popular markets in the poor eastern neighborhoods of Baghdad are full of sellers and shoppers, and the authorities have not been able to close them and impose curfews, which raises fears for many of the escalating number of infections among citizens of the Corona virus.
Vegetable salesman Salah al-Lami says, "A one-day layoff affects my living conditions. I have a wife and 4 children who have to support them and meet their needs."
He adds to "Al-Sharq Al-Awsat" that "the plaster in Iraq no one turns to them, and they have to manage their affairs, whatever the risks, all the oil and state funds from the share of employees, and the placement does not get anything from them, so we are forced to go out to work despite the risks and the possibility of my infection, We have no other options. "
While the Iraqi government finds itself unable to provide what can help those groups to overcome the current crisis, the director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund, Jihad Azour, yesterday warned of the effects of the Corona virus on the economies of many countries in the Middle East . "The challenge will be especially daunting for fragile and torn countries like Iraq, Sudan and Yemen," Azour told Reuters.
In turn, the spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi, acknowledges the harsh conditions facing the poor segments of Iraq these days. He says in an interview with "Asharq Al-Awsat" that "the poverty rate in Iraq is 20 percent of the total population, which is equivalent to about 7 million citizens, most of them are in the southern governorates."
Al-Hindawi agrees that "extreme poverty has led some groups to rebel against the decision to curfew and not be indifferent to the risks of transmission of HIV infection."
And he points out that "the authorities are discussing a set of measures to alleviate the poor, who represent 20 percent of the population, but are not yet able to take practical steps in this direction, given the economic problems that the country suffers from."
The living difficulties that afflict small groups have prompted social, civil and religious activities during the past days to launch campaigns to deliver an integrated food basket to poor families in Baghdad and the rest of the provinces. Popular appeals and criticisms directed at political parties and blocs also prompted some of them to provide aid in facing the threat of Corona virus in Iraq.
In this regard, the head of the Al-Hikma Movement directed Ammar Al-Hakim to place the capabilities of his movement at the disposal of the Ministry of Health in the face of Kurna.
Al-Hakim said in his message to Minister of Health Jaafar Allawi: "In order to truly contribute to supporting the efforts of dedicated and dedicated staff from your ministry and ministries and institutions supporting to ward off the danger of this epidemic from our nation and our people, we would like to put all the capabilities and halls of (the stream of wisdom) at your disposal in All of Iraq’s governorates as needed. ”Ended 29 / A 43
