28 countries expressed, on Thursday, their concern over recent reports of increased intimidation and attacks targeting demonstrators, journalists and electoral candidates in Iraq.
The countries of the "28" are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, USA.
These countries mentioned, in a joint statement on the human rights situation in Iraq under Item 2 - Interactive Dialogue, issued by the United Nations High Commissioner, and reviewed by Mawazine News, in which it said: "Madam President, the signatories to this joint statement wish to recognition of the efforts made by the Iraqi government to improve the protection of human rights. this is necessary for the stability and long - term prosperity in Iraq , and we are ready to continue to provide assistance. "
the statement added:" We commend the Iraqi government for its decision to hold early important elections too within a few months After the peaceful demonstrations of Iraqi youth in 2019 to demand political reform, real economic opportunities, and improved government services.”".
He continued: “The 2019 protests unfortunately escalated into violence resulting in the deaths of at least 487 protesters. The Iraqi government has clearly committed to holding the perpetrators accountable for the violence. We commend Prime Minister Al-Kadhimi for his participation in this regard. However, while recognizing the complex environment where the work of armed outside the control of the state authorities, we note that progress has been limited so far. " the
statement urged the Iraqi government to" renew their commitment and to further intensify its current efforts for accountability, in line with international standards for fair trial and due process " We are deeply concerned by recent reports of increased intimidation and targeted attacks, including against protesters, human rights defenders, journalists, media workers and electoral candidates.
He stressed, that "peaceful assembly rights, freedom of association, freedom of expression, freedom of the media, is essential in democratic societies and for the protection of human rights , " asserting that " the Iraqi government needs to strengthen its efforts to create a general environment that is safe for all Iraqis."
Abizaid By stating: "We also encourage the Office of the High Commissioner and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq to further promote a human rights-based approach in Iraq, and to provide all necessary assistance to the Iraqi authorities to fulfill Iraq's international obligations to respect fundamental freedoms, such as the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly for all."
