US President Joe Biden imposed restrictions on launching drone attacks against extremist groups outside the fields of wars in which the United States is officially involved, namely Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, modifying the approach of his predecessor, Donald Trump, who authorized the use of these raids on a large scale.
A spokesman for the US Defense Department, John Kirby, said in a press conference that any strike planned against extremist groups outside Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq will be referred to the White House to obtain his permission before it is carried out.
Kirby spoke of "interim directives that have been distributed to provide a comprehensive view of the president on important operations."
He added that the directives are not "permanent" and that the matter does not mean "stopping" the attacks by means of drones.

According to the New York Times, military commanders were secretly informed of these directives, which were announced in recent days when Biden took office on January 20.
Since the beginning of his presidential term in 2016, Trump had delegated the powers of managing military operations against extremist groups that his predecessor Barack Obama had personally handled to his military commanders, affirming his "confidence in them."
Since Trump's arrival in power, the drone strikes have doubled from 11 operations in Somalia in 2015 to 64 operations in 2019, according to the specialized Airwars organization.
Drone strikes have become the only method in countries where the US military presence is limited to a few elite elements in support of government forces, such as Somalia, where the United States is targeting Al-Shabaab militants, and Libya, where it is pursuing ISIS fighters.
