    Saleh said in a tweet on {Twitter}: "Today, we presented to the House of Representatives a new draft penal law, 50 years after the issuance of the Penal Code of 1969, keeping pace with the spirit of the times and major transformations in our society.
    It aims to end texts carried over from the era of dictatorship, and places Iraq among the countries that adhere to international standards in crime, punishment and freedoms.

    And the presidential statement, which {Euphrates News} received a copy of, stated: “In an expanded meeting, the President of the Republic presented, today at the Peace Palace in Baghdad, the new draft Penal Code to the House of Representatives, which was submitted by the Supreme Judicial Council to the Presidency of the Republic in the context of cooperation between the presidency. And the Supreme Judicial Council in the field of legislating laws required by the developments of the times, to replace the Penal Code of 1969, and based on legal drafting and harmonization with the Iraqi legislation in force and not violating the constitution, and not inconsistent with international covenants, aiming to achieve security, solidarity and stability.
    And between: "The meeting included the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hassan Al-Kaabi, the Parliamentary Legal Committee, the President of the Bar, the President of the Iraqi Jurists Union, a number of experts and legal scholars, and a group of academics who are professors of law in Iraqi universities."
    Saleh said, "The new draft law is the most comprehensive amendment in fifty years to the Iraqi Penal Code of 1969 and its amendments made to it by the dissolved Revolutionary Command Council and orders issued by the Coalition Provisional Authority."
    He pointed out, "The project was adopted by the Supreme Judicial Council and the State Council was consulted in it, while the Advisory Board in the Presidency of the Republic worked on it by taking advantage of the Iraqi competencies and the various jurisprudential circles to reach a formula that fits with the new situation in Iraq."
    He added: "There have been major transformations in Iraq during the past decades, but its legal system and the penal code in particular remained in a framework that did not keep pace with developments in the political system and in Iraqi society."
    The President of the Republic pointed out that: “One of the most prominent features of the new law is the establishment of deterrent punitive texts to combat crimes of financial and administrative corruption, prevent impunity, oblige embezzlers to return funds, criminalize acts and intensify penalties for crimes committed against the national economy, and that the law attaches great importance to protecting the family. and criminalization of the acts committed against it.
    He also stressed, "The new draft law has taken into account all international agreements and treaties, especially those ratified by Iraq as part of national law and through consulting the United Nations and the Red Cross, and it will have positive consequences that make Iraq in the ranks of countries committed to international law and international standards." relating to crime and punishment, personal freedoms, and abuses that occur in society.
    The President of the Republic indicated that: "The draft law is an important event and development and a breakthrough to addressing a legacy that requires treatment, stressing that Iraq wants to be and must be in line with the international system with regard to these important concepts."
