US Senate passes draft penal code against Hezbollah

The US Senate has passed a bill against Hezbollah, approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
According to a statement issued by the Council, the draft law will strengthen and expand the scope of economic and financial sanctions imposed by the law to prevent the financing of international terrorism in 2015.
US President Donald Trump has branded Lebanon's terrorist group Hezbollah a "threat" to the Lebanese people and the region as a whole.
"The Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorists are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans ... and continue to pose a serious threat to the United States and its allies," the statement quoted Senator Marco Rubio as saying.
"The president and Congress must build on the successes of our 2015 law that targeted Hezbollah and its proxies and enact this new project to strengthen international efforts to combat the financing and expansion of Hezbollah's terrorist and missile threats, drug trafficking and other criminal activities."
US lawmakers earlier introduced legislation aimed at increasing sanctions on Hezbollah by further restricting its ability to raise funds, recruit and increase pressure on its banks.
