{Economic: Al Furat News} The Customs Authority has prepared a draft decision to amend the fees for the customs categories imposed on imports of goods and merchandise, stressing that they are in the final stages and will be presented to the Minister of Finance soon.
The Director-General of the authority, Shaker Al-Zubaidi, said in a press statement, "The review of fees for five categories of raw materials, capital and industrial goods, medicines, electrical and cosmetic devices, aims to increase the authority's efficiency in collecting fees, reducing personal diligence and combating customs evasion, based on the provisions of Article / Second of the amended Customs Tariff Law 22 of 2010, in which the Minister of Finance was authorized to amend the percentage of fees and present it to the Council of Ministers for a vote.
He pointed out, "not to prejudice the goods of a similar product to the imported local product, subject to the Law on the Protection of Iraqi Products, No. (11) for the year 2010."
He cautioned that "the authority has not neglected the importance of anti-monopoly for some goods and materials covered by protection, in light of the increase in demand for some of them, offset by a gradual rise in prices, as a main reason for creating a secondary and pivotal market for monopolizing basic materials," noting that "in the face of this, it interferes The state to control the prices of multiple commodities, the treatment of which is no less important than other strategic decisions.
He pointed out that "the change consists in taking a very important decision from the concerned authorities, focused on reconsidering customs duties or canceling protection fees on imports concerned with monopoly for a specific period, such as iron and construction materials imported from outside the country, which is offset by an increase in the intensity of competition between different companies. In light of the consumer’s search for the lowest prices, with high quality, according to the specifications set by the state, as well as encouraging local factories and companies to actually compete with the imported goods that are included in the construction of the home of the citizen who dreams of owning land.
Al-Zubaidi asks, "How can a citizen build it (ie, his land) in light of the instability of the prices of raw materials involved in the construction process, and this includes small industrial and agricultural projects?" .
In parallel, and to combat corruption in investment projects, Al-Zubaidi revealed a supportive plan for the state’s efforts to reform and support investors, and said: “Customs is working in coordination with the Ministry of Finance to prepare a list of legal exits to reduce or cancel exemptions granted to some sectors according to the decisions in force, to curb the phenomenon of Corruption in customs exemptions for investment materials and the government and mixed sectors, which is estimated at more than 750 billion dinars annually.
