The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "FAO" considered, on Wednesday, the holding of the Regional Conference for the Middle East and North Africa in the capital, Baghdad, an opportunity to revive the Iraqi marshes and discuss water scarcity in the region, while pointing to the conduct of a relief operation for livestock in Iraq.
The Assistant Director-General of the Organization, Abdul Hakim Al-Waer, said that "the conference, which was held in partnership between (FAO) and Iraq, is an opportunity to draw the attention of the world and the region to the importance of Iraq and mobilize support to provide opportunities for cooperation in the field of agricultural development and achieving food security."
He added that "the conference is an opportunity to revive the Iraqi marshes and discuss water scarcity in order to reach solutions," noting that "Iraq is not alone in suffering from water scarcity, but rather it is a crisis in the Middle East and North Africa as a whole."
Al-Waer added, "The Baghdad conference was a very big opportunity to cooperate with all the delegations participating in the conference, whether Turkish or Iranian, to discuss water scarcity and food security in the region."
The Assistant Director-General of the organization pointed out that "the organization's office in Iraq has been working for some time on the relief operation of livestock threatened by drought in some Iraqi regions."
The 36th Regional Conference for the Near East and North Africa, which was launched over the past two days, concluded on Monday and Tuesday, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the title “Recovery and Re-Employment”, in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, to discuss the challenges facing countries Middle East and North Africa in terms of agriculture and water.
It is noteworthy that Iraq suffers from water scarcity as a result of lack of rain and low water revenues in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which affected the agricultural plan for the current season, which shrank to 50% from what it was during the last season.
The General Authority for Groundwater of the Ministry of Water Resources announced last January that it had completed drilling about 600 water wells in 2021 to confront the water scarcity in Iraq.
