A government advisor confirmed that the lack of rain has exacerbated the water crisis in Iraq, noting that the agricultural governorates have been greatly affected by the current dry season.
Aoun Diab, advisor to the Ministry of Water Resources, said, “Water is one of the most important and dangerous issues. Because it relates to people's lives.”
Diab added, "The state should give water the first priority at the level of developing the irrigation projects at home."
Diab pointed out that "the revenues of the Tigris and Euphrates have been affected in large proportions this year," stressing that "Iraq did not witness this season a heavy fall of rain that in previous years gave complete irrigation to crops."
He noted that "important agricultural governorates such as Wasit, Babil and Diyala did not witness an effective rainfall in order to assist in the cultivation process."
Diab continued, "External revenues have declined sharply, and the response of upstream countries is not at the required level, and these are issues that carry a political nature."
He stated, "Iraq has no choice but to extend the invitation, and we have sent an official invitation to Iran to attend the second water conference that was held in Baghdad recently, but it did not attend."
Diab said, "The Tigris and Euphrates rivers, due to the investment of the upstream countries, have shifted from two floating international rivers to organized channels that depend on what is released from the dams gate."
He continues, "This problem is big, and therefore we need to set stable and fair quotas for Iraq in accordance with international laws."
