Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein stated that Iraq constantly communicates messages between the Americans and Iranians regarding the nuclear agreement dialogues, stressing that the two parties reached an agreement that would contribute to stabilizing the internal situation, and he talked about Arab efforts to conduct dialogues aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Hussein said on the sidelines of the Doha International Forum held in Qatar and in an interview with Al-Monitor, Al-Akhbariya, and its translation (Al-Mada), that "reaching a nuclear agreement with Iran is in the interest of Iraq."
Hussein, who arrived in Doha last Friday to participate in the forum in its 20th session, said that the Iranian foreign minister called me and told me that they had reached the final stages of negotiations in Vienna on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
In response to a question about the role that Iraq can play in the diplomatic field between the United States and Iran, Hussein said, "We are in agreement in this regard and are in contact with the two parties, and that since the beginning of the negotiations until now they have been talking to us about the progress of the negotiations, and sometimes we try Delivering messages between the Americans and the Iranians.”
Hussein pointed out, "Reviving the nuclear agreement would calm tensions internally in Iraq and at the regional level as well."
Hussein went on to say, "The conflict between Washington and Iran is reflected in its returns on the soil of Iraq, and we are paying the price as a result." Prior to assuming the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2020, Hussein held the position of Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Finance from 2018 to 2020, and held a number of executive and senior positions in the regional government.
Hussein said that the Iranian missile attack on Erbil on March 13 could be related to the Vienna talks or other regional issues, noting that “Iraq, which has formally protested to Iran about the attack, is conducting its own investigations, and if the investigations are completed, we will have a talk about it.” On the other hand, Hussein said that he does not know whether “the Iraqi parties will be able to form a new government during the parliament meeting, and this will depend on the possibility of collecting a quorum of two-thirds of parliament members on this day, and if this is not achieved,” Hussein says, it is “not clear that The government is decided by Parliament or the Federal Government. Iraq had held its early parliamentary elections in October 2021, but the government formation process is still stalled five months after the results were announced.
Hussein also said, "Iraq will be part of a group of countries in the Arab League to conduct a dialogue with Russia and other world powers to help resolve the conflict."
The Iraqi minister had said during his meeting with the British ambassador to Baghdad, Mark Bryson Richardson, that his country supports diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and said that “Baghdad supports intensifying diplomatic efforts to reach a political solution, end military operations, and work on calm, restraint and respect for the principles of International law, the Charter of the United Nations and the sovereignty of states over their territories.” Regarding Iraq’s relationship with political developments and crises at the regional and international levels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said, “Other neighboring countries may have an impact on our policy, and for this reason and in order to manage and control the crisis locally, we are forced to address crises outside Iraq’s borders.” Hussein indicated that Iraq has given priority to good relations with all Gulf countries and is looking forward to opportunities for dialogue to be conducted within the Doha Forum.
