In Iraq, there is a lot of talk about the loss of the Iraqi state’s imports due to the failure to “automate” Iraqi customs, and political and armed parties exploiting their influence to smuggle and circumvent the state by not paying customs tariffs, but new measures taken by the General Authority of Customs limited this.

He added, "This mechanism will limit evaders from paying customs tariffs, in addition to facilitating procedures for stakeholders and ending any delay in completing their transactions."

Because of the importance of customs and border crossings, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, when he assumed office in 2020, focused on this file, and sought a campaign to fight “corruption” in it and prosecute those involved in smuggling operations.
