On Friday, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, Ahmed al-Jubouri, set conditions that must be met, to address desertification and climate change in the country.
Al-Jubouri said, "Tackling desertification and the lack of rain in Iraq and climatic changes requires the government to fully exploit the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and make use of them by constructing dams and reservoirs."
He stressed the need to "complete important and strategic irrigation projects such as the South Gezira irrigation project, and this is not only to eliminate desertification, but also to revitalize the country economically."
Al-Jubouri, a representative from Nineveh Governorate, urged the concerned authorities to "develop an integrated plan to recycle the waters of rivers in Iraq, before it flows into the Shatt al-Arab and is wasted in the sea."
The member of the House of Representatives warned against "the situation remaining as it is," noting that "desertification and drought require a real plan and great work to save the country from their dangers."
Iraq is considered one of the five countries most affected by climate change, and it is living evidence that global action has not yet crystallized, and that achievement is much more difficult than recommendations and decisions, and that the earth, as in Iraq in particular, is thirsty, and it has always been known through its civilizations as the country of Mesopotamia or Mesopotamia, which requires viable solutions based on trees and forests, apparently as humanity's last resort in order to save the earth.
Official figures in Iraq confirm that desertification has affected 39% of the lands, and the increase in soil salinity threatens the agricultural sector in 54% of the cultivated lands, noting that the rainy season for the year 2020-2021 was the driest in the past 40 years, which led to a shortage Sharp water flows in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers amounted to 29% (in the Tigris) and 73% (in the Euphrates).
International and local experts believe that Iraq needs more afforestation that achieves the oxygen equation in order to control carbon dioxide levels, contribute to preserving water in the soil and prevent the rapid drying of water sources such as rivers.
