Shafaq News/ Al-Anbar is the largest Iraqi governorate, which constitutes about a third of the country's area, and although the desert environment prevails over most of its land, it is one of the agricultural governorates, and this profession is the most widespread among the people, but the scarcity of rain and low water levels in the Euphrates River in addition to the lack of support The government threatens agriculture with extinction.
A number of farmers said in separate interviews to Shafaq News Agency, "Working in agriculture in Anbar and the rest of the country's cities has become a useless burden. Rather, it is a material and health loss. The farmer spends throughout the agricultural season plowing and cultivating the land and pays the costs of that with large amounts of money from his personal account, The harvest season comes, and the same scenario is repeated, without any support.
They pointed out that "the state, instead of going to import, had paid our financial dues and supported us with 10% of the amounts that go to import some agricultural crops and grains, the farmer would be fine, and the state would not have to import any crop from abroad."
Anbar's food basket is dying
Ahmad al-Dulaimi, the mayor of Karma district, east of Anbar, says, "Al-Karma is characterized by large agricultural lands, especially extending from the side of the Karma Island to the al-Khayrat area. These lands are Anbar's food basket in every season, and they always met the needs of the district and the governorate in terms of vegetables and other agricultural materials."
And Al-Dulaimi, in his speech to Shafaq News, said that "due to the lack of rain this year, we do not expect a better agricultural season than the previous seasons, and despite this, farmers who enjoy a good financial situation rely on mechanization and advanced agricultural machinery, but unfortunately they did not find government support for the agricultural sector." which is almost non-existent.
He pointed out that "even fertilizers have increased in price from the previous year, so it is assumed that there will be support for the agricultural sector, otherwise it will be negatively reflected on the product and the consumer."
Al-Dulaimi added, "Farmers rely on the pivotal irrigation system represented by 2,000 sprinklers on the island of Karma, and such a number of sprinklers fills the need, but we hoped that this season would be bigger and more."
And he added, "As a local government in the Karma district, we are shackled. We cannot provide the necessary support to farmers, other than fuel for agricultural machinery, and we continue to supply them with it, and this is all we can."
Al-Dulaimi stressed, "We have appealed to the local government of the province and the federal government to have special support for the agricultural sector in the Karma district, and the approval has not yet been obtained."
He concluded by saying, "About 1,000 tons of wheat and barley crops are marketed per day, but if the support and the crop are not at the normal level, it will be less."
bad reality
The mayor of Al-Qaim district in western Anbar, Ahmed Al-Mahlawi, says that “the reality of the agricultural sector in Al-Qaim is very bad, due to the lack of support for farmers from the Ministry of Agriculture, as the support for seeds and chemical fertilizers is very little, in addition to the scarcity of electric power, which constitutes a great burden on the farmers.” ".
He added in his interview with Shafaq News, "What doubles the suffering of the farmers, is that they are forced to buy fuel, and the Ministry of Oil, in turn, does not support farmers by reducing the price of fuel for them, and this in turn is a great cost on the farmers' shoulders."
And he added, "One of the most prominent suffering of the farmers is the issue of the pivotal agricultural projects located south of Al-Qaim district, which constituted Anbar's yield of wheat and barley and covered the needs of the governorate and several other governorates. This applies to all other agricultural projects, including fruits and vegetables.
Al-Mahlawi summarized his speech with several demands: “First, to support farmers with fertilizers and seeds, and secondly to facilitate granting agricultural loans so that the farmer can buy pivot sprinklers and modern agricultural machines, and thirdly, we demand the Ministry of Oil to support farmers with fuel, and fourthly, we demand the Ministry of Electricity to increase the share of Al-Qaim district of electric energy so that farmers can carry out their work ".
Problems other than support
While the Deputy Governor of Anbar for Administrative Affairs, Jassem Al-Halbousi, said that "the decline of the agricultural sector in Anbar is not only borne by the local and central governments, but the main reason is the general conditions that have greatly affected the sector, especially the scarcity of water and the lack of rain."
And he said in his speech to Shafaq News, that "many crops depended on the lack of rain this season, which affected the sector greatly," noting that "the cultivated areas this season are few, and they are not compared to the areas that were being cultivated during the past seasons." .
He pointed out that "our expectations for this year are that agricultural yields will be much lower than the previous one, and there will be pressure on the state due to the need for grain, despite the government's attempt to support the agricultural sector and farmers by buying wheat from the farmer at a price of 750,000 dinars per ton."
Al-Halbousi explained, "Despite the attempts to solve the agricultural problems, the problem is that the cultivated areas are limited, so we do not believe that it will meet the needs of the governorate."
He concluded by saying, "Currently we are going through a harvest season that has not ended so that we can know the harvested quantities in detail, but it is clearly much less than last year, during which we were able to achieve self-sufficiency."
