For decades, government departments and state institutions depended on energy from generation plants or imported electricity, but the continuation of the electricity crisis prompted a number of institutions to think of alternatives and turn to clean energy as a solution to this crisis, especially in Nineveh.
Harith Younis, Director of the Clean Energy Company, said, "Iraq is very recent in this field and is backward by several decades in the field of sustainable energy, but fortunately, we have received the latest global technologies in this field from international and sober companies, and there is a very big opportunity to use clean energy."
Solar energy projects and other sources of clean energy came within the recent plans of the Ministry of Electricity, as solutions that may contribute to reducing pollution rates and dependence on fuel in power generation and reducing the import of electricity and gas from neighboring countries, according to Nineveh Electricity.
Muhammad Hamid, Director of Information for the Electricity Distribution of Nineveh Center, said, "There is a tendency by the Ministry of Electricity to establish solar energy farms, especially as it is clean energy and a good and excellent alternative in order to support the electrical system."
The urgent need for alternative energy prompted the Mosul municipality to use it on a large scale through street lighting systems, traffic signals and indication boards, as a first step towards broader steps to use this energy in other areas.
Nashwan Hani, director of the Traffic Engineering Division in the Mosul Municipality, says that "the division has long ago introduced solar energy in traffic lights."
Hani adds that "there is certainly an economic feasibility in the use of solar energy, as the establishment of a unified system that works continuously is more economical than delivering electricity to poles and digging streets."
