On Tuesday, the US ambassador to Iraq, Elena Romanovsky, welcomed the recent decision of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, in which he called for an end to armed conflicts and the withdrawal of demonstrators from the Green Zone.
“The United States welcomes recent calls for protesters to immediately end the conflict and withdraw from government institutions, and we are encouraged by reports that sit-in participants are beginning to disperse,” Ambassador Romanovsky said in a tweet.
She added, "Washington urges all citizens to allow the Iraqi government institutions to continue their work to support Iraq's security, stability and sovereignty. The urgent challenges facing Iraq can only be resolved through serious dialogue. Now is the time.”
The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, directed his supporters to withdraw completely from the Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad, and end the "Ashura revolution" within a period of one hour, strongly criticizing the armed clash that took place between his supporters and the security forces, saying that "the killer and the victim are in the fire."
Al-Sadr said in a press conference held this afternoon at his residence in Al-Hanana in Najaf governorate, that “regardless of who started the strife yesterday, I walk with my head bowed, and I apologize to the Iraqi people who are the only affected by what is happening, the killer and the killed are in the fire.”
Immediately after the conference ended, the Sadrist movement's supporters rushed to withdraw collectively from the Green Zone, which turned into a direct battlefield over the past night and this day, until the movement's leader's conference began, which halted the state of direct confrontation.
