On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly approved a draft resolution allowing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to participate in its high-level meetings, which start in New York next Tuesday, through a videotaped speech.
This came as a result of voting on the project submitted by 65 countries, including Turkey, in the General Assembly Hall in New York.
The resolution received the approval of 101 out of 193 countries, while 7 countries (Russia, Syria, Eritrea, Cuba, North Korea and Nicaragua) rejected, and 19 countries abstained (including Iraq, Iran, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka).
Among the sponsors of the resolution, in addition to Turkey, are the United States, France, Britain, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Austria and Monaco.
Commenting on the decision, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said at a press conference held at the permanent headquarters of the international organization in New York: "We always welcome the decisions issued by representatives of Member States."
The resolution, seen by Anatolia, stated that "the General Assembly notes with concern cases in which the leaders of countries cannot personally participate in its sessions for reasons beyond their control, due to the continued foreign invasion, aggression and military actions that do not allow them to leave their countries and return to them safely."
And he added: “It was decided that Ukraine could submit a pre-recorded recording of the head of state that will be played in the General Assembly Hall during the general debate at its 77th session, after being presented to him by the representative of the State physically present in the General Assembly Hall.”
Next Tuesday, the activities of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly will begin in New York, where heads of state and government of more than 110 countries are expected to deliver their statements in the assembly hall.
On February 24, Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine, followed by international rejection and economic sanctions against Moscow, which required to end its operation Kyiv's abandonment of plans to join military entities, which the latter considers an "interference" in its sovereignty.
