The Democratic Party and the Union confirm progress in the presidential negotiations
Baghdad/ Firas Adnan
The two parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, reported the continuation of their dialogues regarding the position of the President of the Republic, expressing their hope to reach a common candidate, pointing out that the discussions have reached advanced stages and include all topics of one concern such as the file of elections and the presidency of the Kurdistan region and Kirkuk governorate.
A member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Ali Al-Faili, said that "the negotiations with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan are discussing several files."
Al-Faili added that "one of the files is the issue of electing the president of the republic, in addition to other issues related to the province of Kirkuk, the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan region, and the presidency of the region."
He pointed out, "These files are related to each other, and therefore there is a possibility to offer flexibility on one axis for the sake of another axis."
Al-Faili pointed out that "the dialogues over the position of President of the Republic have made great progress, since the first meeting that took place a month ago, when the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Massoud Barzani, received the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Bafel Talabani, there was an understanding on broad lines."
He explained, "This meeting was followed by an expanded meeting between the political bureaus of the two parties headed by Nechirvan Barzani and Bafel Talabani."
Al-Faili stressed that "the last meeting took place two days ago, when Masoud Barzani received in his office Bafel Talabani again, and all these meetings have witnessed great progress in the file of the candidate for the post of President of the Republic."
He stressed, "The two parties are not in a hurry to nominate the President of the Republic, as they want to become a catalyst in creating the ideal atmosphere for the next government."
Al-Faili went on to say that “the government is facing great challenges, so before proceeding with them and electing the President of the Republic, there should be a national dialogue that includes everyone that will produce positive results and reassurances, especially for the Sadrist movement, in order to make the current stage a success.”
For his part, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Burhan Sheikh Raouf, said that "dialogues are continuing with the Kurdistan Democratic Party on all controversial points, most notably the issue of the candidate for the president of the republic."
Sheikh Raouf added, "Those consultations have not reached a final agreement until the present time, but they are continuing to reach an independent candidate."
He pointed out that "the two parties, in the event that they do not reach an agreement on the position of the President of the Republic, will enter the election session, each with its candidate."
Sheikh Raouf explained that "the two parties are keen to reach an agreement, and they have confirmed the continuation of dialogues and communication, in the hope that we will reach a common candidate, and we are making all efforts to achieve this goal."
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan is seeking to renew confidence once again in the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, while the Kurdistan Democratic Party nominated Reber Ahmed Khaled for the position.
The constitution stipulates that the President of the Republic, within 15 days of his election, assigns the candidate of the most numerous bloc to form the new government.
