The Minister of Transport and Communications in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Anu Jawhar, announced that the decision to reduce the price of mobile phone recharge cards is not issued in the Kurdistan Region and that this measure is the prerogative of Baghdad, adding that his ministry demanded from the year 2019 and in official books to cancel the tax imposed on these cards.
For the first time, the Minister of Transport and Communications in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Anu Jawhar, revealed through the Rudaw Media Network, the opinion of the Kurdistan Region in the statements of the Iraqi Minister of Communications about reducing the price of mobile phone recharge cards, declaring that “Since 2019, we have demanded through official books to cancel The 20% tax imposed on mobile phone recharge cards. In a letter we sent to the Iraqi Federal Ministry of Communications, we asked to cancel that tax, or if it is not canceled, to return the tax paid by the citizens of the Kurdistan Region to the Kurdistan Region to use it to pay salaries, build roads and streets, and buy medicines.
The Minister of Transport and Communications in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Anu Jawhar, stressed that "it is not fair for the citizens of the Kurdistan Region to pay the tax, to go to Baghdad."
At the beginning of her tenure, the Iraqi Minister of Communications, Hiyam al-Yasiri, pledged to cancel the 20% tax imposed on mobile phone recharge cards, which was imposed in 2015.
The Iraqi Minister of Communications said that this tax was imposed in 2015 after the emergence of ISIS on mobile phone recharge cards, because the financial conditions of Iraq at that time were not good due to the ISIS war and the decline in oil prices, which necessitated the imposition of this tax.
And the Iraqi Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, added that "the economic conditions in Iraq have begun to recover and the need for that tax is no longer needed, and we will prove its abolition in the federal general budget for the year 2023.
