Representatives and specialists warned of the closure of the economic and oil ports due to the location of the Kuwaiti drilling rig within the shipping lane and the expansions taking place in it, and called for urgent diplomatic action to address this file.
According to experts, the platform constitutes a serious violation of Iraq's sovereignty and economic rights in the waters, which threatens to renew the crisis between Iraq and Kuwait, which is not entitled to exploit and explore this area for exploration or drilling in accordance with Articles 55, 56 and 60 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982.
A report by the official Al-Sabah newspaper quoted the former Minister of Transport, Amer Abdul-Jabbar, as saying that Kuwait’s establishment of a drilling and exploration platform for oil in the maritime trade zone must be faced with legal measures and diplomatic moves to end the Kuwaiti marine transgression.
Abdul-Jabbar called on the Prime Minister to cancel the orders issued under the previous caretaker government, and to stop the minutes of the meeting signed between the Iraqi and Kuwaiti Ministries of Transport on 8-23 of this year related to maritime and commercial activities in the regional and commercial waters in the Arabian Gulf to avoid economic and sovereign damage to the country. .
A document issued by the Ministry of Transport, the Diwani Order Committee (123) for the year 2021, revealed that the location of the drilling and exploration platform (Phoetix Oriental) is geographically located between the navigational channel leading to and from the Iraqi commercial ports in Umm Qasr within 5 nautical miles and between the channel leading to and from our ports. Oil (Basra - Al-Amiya - Platforms - Al-Rahouya) at a distance of (18) nautical miles and from the breakwater of the large port of Al-Faw 27 miles.
For his part, the expert in the affairs of the high sea, Salah Al-Basri, said that Kuwait's transgressions on Iraq's maritime properties and borders are still continuing.
He added that the transgressions represent one of the most important reasons and the various crises existing between the two countries, which were recently renewed due to Kuwait's transgression of Iraq's economic waters in the Arabian Gulf and the construction of an oil platform and facility for drilling and exploration, contrary to Article 57 of the Law of the Sea Convention.
