Shafaq News/ A member of the Iraqi Parliament, Uday Awad, demanded today, Thursday, the National Security Service to open an investigation with the former Minister of Oil, Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar, on charges of covering up persons accused of the oil smuggling case.
Awwad said in a letter he sent to the head of the Iraqi National Security Agency today, “By following up the oil smuggling operations in Basra, we found that an investigation was not opened into the source of crude oil, as we found a cover-up on some personalities in the Basra Oil Company, as well as the Lines and Pipelines Company, and with the help of the former minister ( Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar), who did not take any action to stop this bleeding and waste of public money.
The parliamentarian demanded an urgent investigation be opened with the former oil minister and the ministry's agents, saying, "All information reached them and they did not take any action."
At the beginning of this month, the National Security Agency announced the details of the overthrow of a large network for theft and smuggling of crude oil in the southernmost province of Basra, and while it indicated that among the members of the network were senior officers and merchants, it clarified that the smuggled quantities are estimated at 75 million liters per month.
Earlier, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced the dismantling of the largest oil smuggling network in Basra.
Al-Sudani said in a tweet to him, "We directed the tracking of oil smuggling networks and the implementation of arrest warrants against the gangs that dared and invaded to steal the rights of Iraqis, and with God's help, the detachments of the National Security Agency, in cooperation with other agencies, managed to dismantle the largest oil smuggling network in Basra."
He added, "We will spare no effort and will work day and night to fight corruption in its various forms."
Assuming a minimum estimate of the sale of this smuggling network per barrel of oil at $50, the revenue generated by the network from selling 75 million barrels per month is close to $4 billion.
