The Ministry of the Interior spoke about the formation of a committee to receive complaints about the negative contents, pointing out that the owners of these publications will be subject to legal accountability.
The ministry's spokesman, Khaled Al-Muhanna, said, "Iraq is facing a reality, which is the penetration of social media into families and homes and has become imposed on everyone."
Al-Muhanna continued, “The ministry sensed negative content that greatly affects citizens in general, especially youth and children.”
He pointed out, "These contents are considered a violation of the law," stressing that "the ministry has launched a platform to receive news and complaints about the degrading contents that represent a great abuse of social media."
Al-Muhanna pointed out that “this committee includes people with experience and competence who look at the content to see the extent of its agreement or contradiction with the law.”
And he added, “The report that the committee writes in light of its review is referred to the competent security authority, if the act constitutes a crime, in order to submit it to the judiciary to take the necessary action.”
Al-Mahna stated that “these acts have become a threat to the social fabric because of the content they display, such as incitement to violence, incitement to hatred, or a violation of public morals.”
And he stressed, “Article 403 of the Iraqi Penal Code punishes offending public morals in this way and publishing topics that offend modesty.”
Al-Muhanna spoke of “a great responsibility before the Ministry of Interior as it is responsible for law enforcement and has tasks related to preventing crimes.”
And he continues, “A message we send to the public and content makers is that they should not use social media in the wrong way, which causes offense to others, taste, or public morals.”
Al-Muhanna emphasized that “the person who publishes the descending content should not be surprised that he will be legally and judicially prosecuted, and the security forces will reach him, since the act he committed has legal consequences.”
And he goes on to say, “Iraqi laws protect personal freedom, but this freedom has limits and controls under legislation that imposes on everyone not to offend others.”
Al-Muhanna called on “parents to follow up with their children about what they publish or what is being followed up on social media, because some content is a factor in youth delinquency,” stressing that “many cases of behavioral deviation have come as a result of degrading content.”
And he stressed, “Many people compare virtual reality with normal life, and this has a direct impact on the psychological state of the recipient in that he portrays life as it should be according to what he sees in the descending contents.”
Al-Mahna went on to say that “many parents have submitted complaints to the security authorities about their children fleeing to unknown destinations, some of them under the influence of degrading publications, and today we have to defend the values of society.”
And security sources had revealed that legal measures had been taken against a number of content owners after describing his publications as degrading.
