Head of the Federal Integrity Commission, Judge Haider Hanoun, stressed, on Tuesday, the importance of international reports on indicators of corruption perceptions, noting international cooperation and legal assistance in the field of combating corruption and recovering its proceeds and those convicted of it.
Judge Hanoun said, during his meeting with a delegation from Transparency International and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), according to a statement received by Mawazine News, that "corruption is a major obstacle to sustainable development in all sectors and a major cause of the expansion of poverty, which in turn leads to the spread of ignorance."
He stressed "the necessity of undermining the scourge of corruption in state institutions and besieging the corrupt and those who devour the people's livelihood and transgress public money," praising "the position of the three authorities in support of the Commission's work, especially the judiciary, which represents the umbrella under which the Commission's investigators work."
He touched on "the importance of bilateral treaties and memorandums of cooperation referred to by the United Nations Convention against Corruption," adding that "Iraq concluded several bilateral cooperation agreements, the most recent of which was with the French side," noting "the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) two years ago." And the desire to strengthen cooperation and legal assistance in the field of combating corruption and recovering convicts and smuggled funds.
For his part, the representative of the German Agency for International Cooperation indicated that "work with the authority began a year ago, as several activities were held including workshops, seminars and training courses in which dozens of employees of the various departments of the authority participated," praising "the courage of the authority's employees in their confrontation with corruption." and prosecuting those who trespass on public funds.”
In turn, Canada Hattar, Regional Adviser for the Middle East and North Africa at Transparency International, said, "The road is long and that Iraq is progressing step by step in the field of transparency and integrity and needs more time and effort," noting "the tireless work that her organization is doing with the Integrity Commission; from In order to prepare the "National Integrity System" and identify the points of strength and weakness," while she explained that "the Corruption Perceptions Index is not the main goal, but rather transparency in work, the government contract system and its relationship with the private sector, and real and transparent competition in awarding contracts."
