    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Monday, the Parliamentary Finance Committee revealed the reasons for the Cabinet’s vote on the draft general federal budget law for three consecutive years.
Committee member Jamal Cougar told (Baghdad Today) that: "The Council of Ministers is mandated, according to the Financial Management Law, to prepare a budget for three years."
He explained, "The first year is compulsory and binding on the government's work, and the other two years are optional, as it is a proposed budget that the government can proceed with or amend."
Cougar added, "The amendment to the optional two-year budget is according to developments in oil prices, but with regard to the budget for the year 2023, the government is obliged to apply it literally as it is."
And the Council of Ministers, in its meeting today, approved the draft general federal budget law for the years (2023, 2024, 2025), and it was referred to the House of Representatives for a vote on it.
Regarding approving the budget for three years, the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani, said in a press conference, "The budget will be repeated for three years in accordance with Financial Management Law No. 6 of 2019, which authorized the Council of Ministers to present a budget for three years."
He explained, "The budget for three years supports financial stability," noting that "the ministries enter at the beginning and end of a year with a stage of hibernation until the approval of the new budget, so we are facing a stability of the budget for a period of three years."
The Prime Minister confirmed that "the draft budget law for three years enjoys a political agreement."
