The Ministry of Electricity stated its intention to reach 80% of the actual need early next month, but it pledged achieving this by securing internal fuel and the resource, revealing the start of the first phase of operating the connection with the Jordanian side.
The electricity file is one of the most important problems that Iraq has been suffering from over the past years, and despite spending 80 billion dollars, citizens still depend on private generators to provide their needs.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Moussa said, "Our preparations for the summer season started early and differ from each year, and the citizen will feel this, provided that the fuel operating the stations is stable, whether the national one or the supplier."
Moussa continued, "The ministry has started preparations since November of last year, to complete and maintain units in all stations, distributed in various governorates in Iraq."
He pointed out, "carrying out extensive maintenance for the transport sector, converting some carrier lines to (double circuit), establishing lines to remove bottlenecks in some governorates, while strengthening the distribution sector, installing fixed and mobile stations, and extracting many nutrients."
Moussa explained, "The Ministry of Electricity has given time ceilings to proceed with its plans, and at the beginning of next month we will reach a load rate of 24,000 megawatts."
And he stressed, "These rates represent about 80% of the actual need for electric energy in the country, so preparations will be good."
Moussa talked about “committing all formations of the Ministry of Electricity not to carry out maintenance work outside the time limit that has been set, but rather it takes place before that.”
He stressed, "The stability of gas and fuel releases towards our stations will help us provide a good service during the summer season, befitting the preparations and great work we are currently doing."
Moussa continues, "The interest of the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, has become great in the energy file, which includes electricity, oil and gas."
He continued, "Al-Sudani is well aware of the size of the problem that we suffer from, which is represented in supplying the stations with gas and fuel, and we have reached a set of procedures that are considered good and help in overcoming previous crises."
Musa said, "The first of these measures, which Al-Sudani instructed, is to install stations that run on fuel and associated gas, and he urged the ministries of electricity and oil to continue cooperation in order to provide the best services to the Iraqi citizen."
He noted that "a visit by the Iraqi Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadel to Iran and in which he met with the Iranian Minister of Energy, in this meeting it was agreed to pay the required quantities of gas to keep pace with the peak summer loads."
Moussa stated, "The electrical connection with Jordan will enter into operation in its first phase at the beginning of June with a capacity of 150 megawatts, by linking the Risha station with the Al-Qaim conversion station, and then Al-Rutba."
And he went on to say, "This link will achieve a balance in the western region and its districts, such as Al-Qaim, Akashat, Anah, and Rawa."
Moussa believes that "talk about electricity and its preparations in light of the current government care has become qualitative, even strategic treatments have become focused on compressing operating expenses and achieving infrastructure."
He pointed out, "The ministry has taken serious and clear steps, and the difference is achieved if the gas releases stabilize, the resource in which we have achieved a balance with the Iranian side, just as we have achieved a balance in gas and national fuel."
Musa added, "Iraq has large stations operating on various types of fuel, with a plan for the ministry that was discussed and approved within the ministerial curriculum to install combined cycle stations that do not need fuel."
He pointed out, "Stations such as Al-Faw, Al-Shinafiyah and the North are large energies that will reach approximately 15,000 megawatts. They will be concerned with bridging the shortfall between supply and demand, but this issue needs time ceilings and a budget."
Moussa denied, "The existence of debts owed by the Ministry of Electricity to the Iranian side for the import of gas operating the stations," noting that "all amounts were paid through the trust fund in the Iraqi Trade Bank."
Moussa went on to say, "Part of those sums may not have reached the Iranian side, but that does not belong to the Ministry of Electricity, which paid everything it owed."
For his part, a member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, Dakhil Radi, said, "There are plans by the ministry to increase production by installing new generation stations, maintaining the stalled units, relying on solar energy, and trying to find ways to rationalize."
Radi added, "The Energy Committee will put pressure on the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Oil and coordinate with the Ministry of Electricity to find immediate solutions and not repeat what happened in terms of overloads and stoppages."
He pointed out, "The committee will also ask the Presidency of the House of Representatives to provide the support the ministry needs to enable it to continue and sustain production and improve the transportation and distribution networks that also suffer from problems."
Radi went on to "the need for cooperation between the Ministries of Electricity and Oil in terms of providing the fuel plan for the stations by ensuring the best equipment for the citizen."
The scourge of corruption gnawing at state institutions is one of the reasons for the continuation of the energy crisis, in addition to the exposure of networks to real problems beyond the control of the state, including the drop in levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the stopping of some power stations in dams, and the terrorist attacks that electricity transmission towers are exposed to from time to time. In addition to the continued increasing demand for current at an annual rate of about two thousand megawatts.
