The Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshes Committee announced, on Monday, that it will host Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein and Minister of Water Resources Aoun Dhiab next week for a discussion about Iraq's share of water from the upstream countries, while noting that the waters of the Maysan Marshes have declined significantly.
Committee member Ibtisam Hashem said, "The Maysan Marshes have declined significantly despite their accession to UNESCO, due to Turkey not giving them an adequate share of water."
She added, "Iraq's entitlement to water amounts to 8,000 cubic meters per second, but Turkey only gives 1,000 cubic meters," adding, "When Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani visited Turkey, 4,000 cubic meters were added per second, and it became 5." Thousands of cubic meters per second, but this procedure only lasted one month.”
And she indicated, "The committee will host the ministers of water resources, Aoun Dhiab and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, next week, to find out about the current government procedures in the water file with the source countries," stressing the need for "Iraq to recover its water share."
