    Shafaq News/ The representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, reaffirmed, on Wednesday, the commitment of the United Nations to support Iraqis in defending freedom of expression.
    "This year, World Press Freedom Day is being celebrated under the slogan (Building a future based on rights: freedom of the press is at the center of human rights)," Blaskhart said, in a statement received by Shafaq News agency.



    She added, "Freedom of expression is fundamental to the functioning of all democratic societies, and free and independent media promote a healthy exchange of ideas and opinions. Not only does it increase transparency, but it is also an important tool for informing authorities and leaders when their policies are not having the intended effect, in order to enable institutions to adaptation and thus prosperity.”
    "The United Nations continues to document, throughout Iraq, ongoing cases of harassment and intimidation, as well as cases of retaliation, whether by legal means or violence, against those who exercise their right to freedom of expression," the UN envoy affirmed.
    Plasschaert noted that "silencing, obstructing, alienating or undermining public discourse achieves two things (tarnishing the image of the state and undermining public trust) and this in turn leads to a multiplier effect, which impedes an open and public dialogue."
    And she stressed the need to “ensure that anyone can express themselves freely and without fear of reprisals, and this includes ensuring that the legal framework protects speech rather than unduly restricting it, and when laws are used to silence, freedom of expression is placed under serious threat, undermining one of the basic building blocks.” in building a democratic society.
    "The United Nations remains committed to supporting Iraqis in defending freedom of expression and other basic rights," she concluded.
