The United Nations Development Program in Iraq has completed 3,500 projects to improve the standard of living for about eight million citizens, in addition to its contribution to the return of more than four million displaced people, while Sweden has granted nearly two million dollars to the program to support the stability of liberated areas.
The representative of the program in Iraq (Oki Lootsma) said, on the sidelines of the conclusion of an agreement with the Swedish side at the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, the day before yesterday, which was attended by "Al-Sabah": that the United Nations, within its development program to restore the stability of liberated areas in Iraq, which was launched in 2015, concluded a memorandum An understanding with Sweden to grant the program one million and 900 thousand dollars.
He added that the funds will contribute to the completion of programs to rehabilitate the infrastructure and vital services that were damaged during the war that Iraq fought with the terrorist gangs of "ISIS", which caused the destruction of those areas and the displacement of the people from them, and thus the program works for social reintegration in them.
Lotsma indicated that the value of the amounts granted by Sweden to support the stability of the liberated areas in Iraq, since the launch of the program, amounted to about 42 million dollars, and Sweden is considered an important partner in the program, and this contribution came at a very important time despite the implementation of many important and vital projects. However, there are still many of them that have not been implemented, due to their need for financial support.
He stated that the number of projects implemented since the launch of the program in 2015 until last April amounted to three thousand and 500, and within the governorates of Anbar, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Nineveh and Diyala, which were distributed among the rehabilitation of schools, hospitals, water stations and electricity networks in homes, in addition to providing short-term job opportunities. , stressing the contribution of these projects to improving the standard of living for about eight million and 300 thousand citizens, in addition to the return of about four million and 900 thousand displaced people to their areas.
For her part, Sweden's ambassador to Baghdad, Jessica Mavarstrom, told Al-Sabah that Iraq and Sweden enjoy a close relationship, revealing that there are about three percent of the Swedish people of Iraqi origin, and therefore her country's government is working to restore stability and security to all regions of the country through the support it provides. to the development programme.
